Days after ordering the midnight lathicharge on non-violent girl protesters, Banaras Hindu University's embattled vice-chancellor Girish Tripathi has gone on an 'indefinite leave'.

In view of this, BHU registrar Neeraj Tripathi has been appointed as interim Vice-Chancellor for two months, news agency ANI reported on Wednesday.

The development comes a day after the BHU reopened after the Dussehra holidays.

The September 23 incident has sparked number of changes in the system. More women force has deployed on the campus to instill confidence among female students.

The BHU administration also installed 52 new CCTV cameras on its gates and in and around women hostels to keep a round the clock vigil on unwanted visitors.

A team of local intelligence unit has also been deployed in plain clothes to keep a watch on anti-social elements.

DNA had reported earlier how Girish Tripathi tried to get an extension for the job.

The BHU didn't even start the process of advertising for the VC post despite a reminder from ministry of human resource development.

According to an official communication sent to the university, a copy of which is with DNA, a letter dated August 1, sent by the ministry, addressed to the Registrar, BHU, had asked the university to start publishing advertisements for the appointment of next VC and inform the ministry of the same, so that the ministry can also publish the advertisement on their website.

However, the BHU initiated the process only on September 29, two months after that communication.
